Fantastic points Jason! I 100% agree that building rapport with your students is vital to being successful as an instructor and the best way to start that is to greet them from the beginning and learn a bit about them. It also helps when you tell them a little about yourself, you can establish your knowledge and background to instill confidence in your learners. Plus as Stacey mentioned it makes you more approachable in the student's eyes and as you mentioned will often open up the shy members of the group. I've seen this happen quite a bit in my courses.

I agree - I do believe we can go overboard. At some point, we can become so engrossed in trying to fit the learning styles that we don't have time for the content. As Dr. Felder said in an interview, "Balance is the key."

I think you have some great ideas to get your learners involved... when does offering too many ways of learning and teaching become over-kill or too much? Where do we draw the line? Is it feasible to do this much for all the different topics and subjects out there?

Thanks Stacey - I do think it works well. It really gives us the opportunity build rapport with the participants and reference conversation throughout the day. I have found that even introverted or shy people will be more engaged throughout the day.

I liked the idea of greeting each student individually as I think this is a great way to relieve the tension of a student starting a new class. It is a good way to show that you as an instructor are approachable and are willing to give each individual attention. Good idea!
